We are still several months from “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” releasing in theaters, but casting is already ramping up for the next two films in the saga of Katniss Everdeen. It’s been announced today that “Game of Thrones” actress Natalie Dormer has landed the role of Cressida and will star opposite Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth in the final two films of the series.
The final two films to conclude the saga will be directed by “Catching Fire” director Francis Lawrence and is a two-part adaptation of the final book, “Mockingjay”, in Suzanne Collins’ bestselling series. It brings the rebellion that was sparked by Katniss’ performance in the original Hunger Games to its explosive conclusion, and Dormer’s Cressida, amongst many new characters, becomes an ally in the fight against the oppressive Capitol, under the control of Donald Sutherland’s President Snow. Julianne Moore had been reported earlier to be in talks for the role of Alma Coin, another powerful antagonist for Katniss to face in her neverending struggle.
Dormer had been most known to audiences from her role as Anne Boelyn on series “The Tudors” opposite Jonathan Rhys-Meyers up until this year, when she made a splash as Margaery Tyrell on “Game of Thrones” and guest starred as Irene Adler on CBS’ Sherlock Holmes series “Elementary.” On the big screen she has appeared in bit parts in films including “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “W.E.” She also completed work on Ron Howard’s Formula One biopic “Rush” with Chris Hemsworth, and Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” opposite Michael Fassbender as well as indie ensemble drama “Posh” opposite Max Irons.
